How MOA Berlin understands sustainability as an operating system.
When the lights go out for global Earth Hour on 28 March, it's far more than just a symbolic act for 60 minutes for us at MOA Berlin. In our first year as an independent urban hub, sustainability is not an „add-on“ that we maintain for certificates. It is the invisible operating system on which our entire identity “Congress, Kiez & Culture” running.
Congress: Sustainability as a compliance guarantor
Green rhetoric is no longer enough for the modern MICE market. Organisers need certainty for their own ESG balance sheet.
„Sustainability is a measurable performance value for us,“ explains Conny Doss, General Manager and spokesperson for the visitBerlin partner hotels (Green Pillow). „Our balance sheet from 2025 shows an increase in governance and compliance structures (GRC) of 2 %. Anyone booking one-day or multi-day congresses with us is booking an ecologically and ethically audited system. From CO2-free heating through our methane plasmalysis process to in-house event production that eliminates unnecessary transport routes: We make sustainability simple and legally compliant for planners.“
The goal for 2026: We use our independence to integrate sustainability directly into economic management and reduce operating costs in the long term through smart efficiency measures.
Kiez: Growth through social responsibility
An urban hub only works if it breathes with its surroundings. Our social balance sheet 2025 shows a growth of 4 % in the social sector, driven by our 200 employees and deep commitment to the neighbourhood.
„We are not building a hotel for an abstract target group, but a neighbourhood living room with a real attitude,“ says Philip Ibrahim, General Manager and an active part of the Pink Pillow Initiative. „For us, social sustainability means diversity and inclusion as the standard, not the exception. Whether through our Clean-Up Days in the neighbourhood or as a safe space for the LGBTQAI+ community, our 200 talented people are at the heart of this culture. They are the ones who bring our promise of appreciation to life for our guests every day.“
Culture: The operational DNA of the future
Our „Sustainability Strategy 2025“ was just the beginning. We are already looking towards our 2040 target: a climate-efficient city hotel with minimum resource consumption and maximum transparency.
What does that mean in concrete terms?
- Waste Intelligence: We consistently reduce food waste and residual waste through structured waste monitoring (KITRO).
- Smart Resource Management: Over 60% of our rooms are already intelligently controlled to significantly reduce energy consumption.
- Certified excellence: As Sustainable Berlin Leader we improved our environmental processes by a further 2 % in 2025 and are an official WWF Earth Hour Partner 2026.
So when we dim the lights in the atrium for Earth Hour, we do so in the knowledge that MOA Berlin is already working at full speed in the background for a future fit for grandchildren. We switch off the lights to focus on the essentials: responsibility as a living culture.
